A volcano is a place on Earth's surface through which magma and volcanic gases are produced. Some volcanoes are composite, cinder cone, and shield. Volcanoes can have either explosive or nonexplosive eruptions. Nonexplosive eruptions are the most common. Explosive eruptions are much rarer. However, the affects of an explosive earthquake are much worse than that of a nonexplosive earthquake. During an eruption, either magma or lava can come out of a volcano. Eruptions from volcanoes can happen under water or on land. Eruptions can create some of the largest mountains on Earth. Also, eruptions help form fertile farmland.
